How to write a good motivation letter?

Most of the people perceive motivation letter a formality during application process. Therefore there are not investing strong efforts to write a personal statement that will ensure their placement for a job/scholarship. However, this often perceived “pure formality” called motivation letter can win you a job interview and future job placement. Below we provided you a list of key elements that have to be included in your letter of motivation, in order to write a good one:

  1. Do not forget to mention why you have decided for the concrete company to apply for a job. Be clear, concise and express your unbiased motivation.
  2. Try to reflect personal approach as much as possible. For example if you know the name of HR person, address the letter to this person.
  3. Do not mention your weak point in the letter, since they will be probably discussed during your job interview. However don’t be to much vainglorious since this will make wrong impression.  Be realistic about yourself and try to point out your strong points.
  4. Your letter should reflect positive spirit and orientation on future. For example you can use following phrase: ”I am eager to improve my skills and fully prepared to adapt myself to the new working environment…”, instead of “I am not experienced in the relevant field.”
  5. Quote and describe concrete facts and situations to articulate your motivation for specific company/placement.
  6. Try to find out as much as possible about company before applying. This will show your interest about company and reflect you ability to prepare relevant information on your future post.
  7.  Put only the most relevant facts and experiences in your motivation letter. Keep it brief and clear. However do not forget to tell something about you as a person.
  8. Mention your accomplishments in education or professional experience. It would be also useful to express you perspectives in career of in education., for example where do you see yourself in the upcoming period.
  9. Use a motivation letter as a tool to distinguish your application from other with sample qualifications.

Motivation letter for a PhD in Global trade and development

University of MontpellierFaculty of Economics and Social SciencesRue de Truel

Montpellier, France

Ileana Mineola

Timisoara Street, 67

Bucharest, Romania

Telephone: XXXXXXXX

Dear Madam, Sir,

I am Ileana Mineola, motivated student in MA in International Economics at the University of Bucharest, expected to graduate at the end of this year. I appreciate this opportunity to introduce myself at your University and to apply for the programme PhD in Global Trade and Development at the University of Montpellier. With my educational background and working experience in the field of international trade, I strongly believe that I am suitable candidate for the programme.

Since my high school days I have developed strong interests for the issues regarding international economics, especially international trade and development, as I advocate the opinion that the export orientated trade is a motor for stronger international development.  That is why I enrolled myself at the University of Bucharest, where I graduated first in my class, with distinction at the programme BA in Economics and Macroeconomic Policy. At the moment, I am writing my master thesis at the same University, based on the research that I have conducted on the role of the international trade in the EU aid assistance policies. Therefore, I would like to apply for a PhD at the University of Montpellier, and in the same time for scholarship at the University’s fund. As I do not have sufficient funds for the tuition fees, I believe that my competences and academic records recommend me for the limited number of placements at the University.

I personally believe that every person applying for PhD in International Economics should be as much as specialized in research and practice in that field, as me. In favor of that thesis I should mention that I have been working within the World Trade Organization, as an Intern in Eurasian economic area. In 2011-2012, I have been staying in Geneva for over a year, where I gained precious experience in the field of international trade and relations in one excellent organization. This experience enabled me to be familiar with the work in international environment and to abide to the international decision making and policies.

During my studies at the University of Bucharest, I have developed special interest for the international development, as addition to my aspiration to be international trade expert. However, I wanted to combine those interests of mine as a Junior Researcher at the International Trade Institute, where I am currently employed. International Trade Institute is one of the most reputable institutes in East Europe, among the institutes with trade development as their main topics of research activity. I was employed on the recommendation of my professor George Lucas, one year ago, as I have proven my skills in topics like Eurasian trade, EU trade policies and international development during our common research. As a Junior Research I am involved in basic research and modeling of intra-industrial trade in the EU, monitoring international trade developments and analyzing new trade policies in the region of Eurasia. One of my most favorable activities was my work on the EUR-Asia model, used for forecast of the future developments in the Eurasia region. I worked on the model for more than one year with small team of researchers at the Institute and after several tests and practice the model revealed surprisingly good application for analyzing international trade in general, not just to focus on the region. As the model got international recognition I was invited to present the model to the Board of the African Development Bank, where it should be implemented for the Bank’s analysis.

Working experience received provided me with a deeper realization of importance of being competent in various spheres of economic research: international trade, econometrics, development and economic policy. I deeply convinced that all those spheres make an Economist to be complete expert in this field of research. The understanding of this fact and my strong aspiration to become highly qualified researcher of international level led me to decision to apply for the position at your University, as the University of Montpellier has a strong reputation in that field.

After I read carefully the description of the PhD programme and the course requirements, I believe that it perfectly matches my research interests and profile. Afterwards I have continued my research at the University website, where I gained useful information about the University campus and the student life in Montpellier. I believe that I will be positive addition to your team, fit well in your organization and be a useful member of the community, as I love to volunteer and to be active in the field of social causes and campaigns.

As I understand, this programme is very competitive, attracting highly motivated students, but I am convinced that my good record at the University and during my work as a researcher give me a strong recommendation for a place at it. I would be honored if you decide to accept my candidateship to be PhD student at the University of Montpellier 2013/2016.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Ileana Mineola

Motivation letter for student exchange

Giancarlo Moretto

Milano Street, 55

Roma, Italy

To whom it may concern,

I am Giancarlo Moretto, student of Pharmaceutical Faculty in Rome at the University of Rome. With this letter I would like to express my strong interest for participation at your Student Exchange Programme in the summer of 2013. As a suture graduate, I plan to build an international career in the field of pharmacy in the EU, so this programme will really mean a lot for my professional aspirations. Capability to handle problems, social balance and the necessity to gain an international experience outside my University make me a proper candidate for this position.

I have done an internship for about two months at a local pharmacy in Rome. During that placement, I have mastered skills like: computer proficiency in pharmaceutical software, how to make the reception of medicaments and register them in the database. Working with people has broadened my communication talent and I learnt how to handle different characters in very short time. Furthermore I assisted the senior pharmacists to prepare and extract remedies, crèmes and potions. With my experience in creating computer applications and English proficiency I was able to adjust to the work in a very short time. I believe that my working experience in combination with my studies make my candidateship for your programme possible.

During my studies, I have been a student representative. I was chosen at the Faculty’s elections for three years in a row. My responsibilities, as a representative included: organizing term exams, social gathering and sport events; representation of my Faculty at the students Senate and facilitation management. Those assignments enabled me to develop strong organization skills and to become responsible young individual, taking into account the needs of my colleges. Also, as a student of University of Rome I discovered the usefulness of team work, especially in laboratory conditions. I advocate the opinion that my team working experience is essential in a community pharmacy and in the area of research also. Only with quality team work great achievement can be richen, and I am have a strong will to pursuit that goal.

Thank you very much in advanced for this opportunity and for considering my application. Considering my experience and skills I believe that your programme will benefit a lot from my presence and it will enhance my future career in the field of pharmacy. I am convinced that I will find a place in all the activities anticipated by your University and I will do my best to adjust to your facilities and courses. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Motivation letter for Erasmus

Natalia Volkovova

Oblakovska, 22/78

Prague, Czech Republic

Dear Madam, Sir,

I am writing to apply for the Erasmus student exchange programme at you University. I would like to spend next semester of my study course at the University of Algarve in Portugal. Currently, I am student of Charles University in Prague, at the study programme of Environmental Chemistry.

I would honor the opportunity if you accept me for the Erasmus programme, because it will mean a lot for me and my future career prospective. Firstly, it would definitely be a very efficient and successfully method to improve my English and Chemistry skills. I have been learning English as my first foreign language since age of seven, and I believe that this experience at your University will improve a lot my knowledge because I will get a chance to communicate with students in similar circumstances. Moreover, I will cherish the opportunity to enhance my lab experience at your facilities, since your University has a great reputation in that field.

I would like to emphasize that I am eager to benefit from this programme, as I will get to know better Erasmus students from the whole Europe, exchanging experiences and practices. I advocate the opinion that Erasmus programme is excellent opportunity to meet various groups of young people, spend quality time with them and get to know their habits, attitudes, lifestyle, etc. Also, living, studying and having fun within international scholars would broaden my horizons and enable me to build strong social network with people through our continent.

Studying at your University I would have a chance to compare the Portuguese higher education system and Czech one. If I become your student I will use this comparison to promote the Portuguese educational system not only in my homeland, but in the whole EU also.

The reasons for choosing your University are:

-          Learning another foreign language, and get familiar with Portuguese culture and customs;

-          To get practice in modern laboratories and work in different environment that at Charles University;

-          Enhance my chances to find a better employment, as I will get a truly multicultural experience, highly valuated nowadays among employers.

I would be very grateful if you consider my application and give me a chance to participate in the Erasmus programme at your University, which would mark my future professional and personal development.

Thank you very much in advanced for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Motivation letter sample for admission to Law School

Dear Sir or Madam,

I  am writing to apply for the Bachelor of Law programme at the University of (write name), as I am interested in international law and justice.

My first experience with the Netherlands was in year 2007, when for one day I met the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Russia. He invited me to attend the celebration of Queensday in St. Petersburg, where I have been able to get deeper insight in the Dutch culture and I liked a lot.

I have always been interested in law as my father was a judge. I have already studied law for one year at the University of (NAME). During this year I understood that studying law is the best choice for me, but now I know that specialization in International law is the best choice. The Hague University offers the exact  educational programme I am interested in. I like the fact that the International Bachelor of Law programme offers not only the law theory, but also practic.  In my opinion, it is the best way how to get extensive knowledge.

As to my personality, I am very sociable – I love meeting new people and also getting to know new cultures. I am also fond of learning languages, so I would love to perfect my English and also to learn Dutch. Thus, I am looking forward to getting to know the Netherlands more thoroughly than I do now.

Studying in the Netherlands will be a great opportunity because Dutch educational system has very high standards of education. I would be fortunate to study law in the Hague, which is international city of peace, justice and security.

Yours faithfully,
