A motivation letter, or sometimes called letter of motivation or motivational letter, is actually a letter being send together with your professional resume to support your application for job, University admission or internship. The motivational letter is actually a personal statement which should persuade selection panel, or human resource clerk that you are perfect candidate for a position.

Motivation letter is a compulsory document only when it is specified in Call for Application, but even if the employer or University do not require motivation letter it is good thing to send one, because letter of motivation serves as an excellent platform for persuading the selection panel. Hence, the content and wording of the motivational letter must be tailored toward particular advertisement, making your application stand out of the crowd.

Bear in mind that employer or Universities receive very high number of applications, and a good motivation letter can be one of the most important factors that differentiate you from the other candidates. Although writing motivation letter can be a boring thing to many people, motivation letter is the only platform where you can demonstrate that you are perfect candidate for the position. This is especially relevant for fresh graduates. Imagine a situation when some company publishes a call for paid internship where the only formal requirement is a specific degree. Call would probably attract hundreds of fresh graduates, having more or less similar resume and experience. In this situation motivational letter is actually the only document that could help you stand out of the crowd since the experience and skills are not working for your profit.

The difference between a cover letter and a motivation letter

When you look into definitions of both, you will probably realize that motivation and cover letter refer to the same type of the letter: letter of introduction accompanying another document such as a resume or CV.

In practice motivation (al) letter is used for application for non-job opportunities, such as University admission, voluntary work, CSOs, while cover letter is more utilized in professional practice because it only highlights the skills and experience relevant to the advertised post. Reason behind is that probably professionals are motivated with the money, while students and volunteers have other drivers. On the other hand professionals usually have vast experience behind, so there is no need to additionally prove their competences for the job, while students have to try harder to prove the link.

However, differences between two types of letters are minor in everyday practice. So in business practice we can only distinguish two main alterations:

Motivation letter has to deliver motivational statement, while in cover letter there is no need to point out your motivation in particular;

Wording and language used to draft cover letters is more formal than the one used in motivational letters, and this is actually due to absence of motivational statement in cover letters.

Should I send Cover ot Motivation letter?

In follow up to the previous discussion, we highlight once again that it is hard to make strict distinction between two, so we strongly advise you to send the letter which is specified in the Call for Applications. If the Call does not specify which letter is to be sent, we recommend you to follow this logic bellow:

Send motivation (motivational) letter to non – job applications, such as University admission, Conference Application, language school applications, paid and unpaid internships, jobs in relief agencies and in charities.

In all other cases send a Cover letter, or sometimes called Application letter, or Letter of Application.

We wish you a lot of success with your application!

Motivation letter form should follow the structure of the formal business letter, implying that your address and contacts come under your name, in the upper right corner of the page. Bellow, on the left, write the name, function, organization and contacts of the person you are writing to.

When you know the name of the person who is going to read your letter, you should address the letter directly to him/her. If you do not know the name and contact address the letter to Admission officer / or HR. Under the receiver’s address, write the date of the day when you are writing the motivational letter.

If you do know the name of the recruiter, start with Dear Mr / Ms / Mrs / Dr, without the full stop that you might expect to follow the abbreviation, and the surname of this person, followed by comma (Dear Mr Jones,). In this case, you should end the letter with the salutation Yours sincerely.

If you do not know the name, start with Dear Sirs, or Dear Sir or Madam and close with Yours faithfully. In the US business correspondence, Yours truly is acceptable in both cases. Do not start the body of the mail with a capital letter, since it follows a comma.

In a best case, a motivational letter has no more than 4 paragraphs. The goal of the first one is to specify what you are applying for and how did you heard about that vacancy. The last one indicates your availability for an interview, suggesting in this way a concrete follow-up for your application.

The second paragraph should list your qualifications. Read carefully the Call, identify the requirements and see how your professional profile matches. Use examples to prove that you possess skills and other knowledge needed for the position. In the best case, you should start from your experience and show how you have developed those qualifications by doing what you have been doing or studying. Same as in the case of your resume, the result should portrait you as a creative, independent person with initiative and ability to deal with responsibilities, apart from the specific skills needed for the job. Briefly, the second paragraph should show why you are good for the job.

The third paragraph should point out why you want this job. You should state your interest for the skills you are going to learn if you get the job. You should leave the impression that you can make a genuine contribution to the company’s operations, while simultaneously deriving satisfaction from your work.

After the 4th paragraph leave a blank line, same as you should do in the beginning, after the salutation (Dear). Write the proper closing, as described above and your name. Do not forget to leave a blank space between the closing and your name personal signature.

Motivation letter form and structure is not the only thing that matters when writing motivation letter. Make sure that you have answered with you letter on the following questions:

Have you clearly stated the reasons/motives for you application?

Have you made clear connection between your qualifications and requirements?

Have you provided examples that prove you are suitable candidate for the position?

Last, but not least before submitting the letter, make sure to check that your letter does not contain errors or typos. Also make sure you have listed all the attachments and that you have enclosed all the documents being required with the Call.

Good luck!

Most of the people perceive motivation letter a formality during application process. Therefore there are not investing strong efforts to write a personal statement that will ensure their placement for a job/scholarship. However, this often perceived “pure formality” called motivation letter can win you a job interview and future job placement. Below we provided you a list of key elements that have to be included in your letter of motivation, in order to write a good one:

Do not forget to mention why you have decided for the concrete company to apply for a job. Be clear, concise and express your unbiased motivation.

Try to reflect personal approach as much as possible. For example if you know the name of HR person, address the letter to this person.

Do not mention your weak point in the letter, since they will be probably discussed during your job interview. However don’t be to much vainglorious since this will make wrong impression. Be realistic about yourself and try to point out your strong points.

Your letter should reflect positive spirit and orientation on future. For example you can use following phrase: ”I am eager to improve my skills and fully prepared to adapt myself to the new working environment…”, instead of “I am not experienced in the relevant field.”

Quote and describe concrete facts and situations to articulate your motivation for specific company/placement.

Try to find out as much as possible about company before applying. This will show your interest about company and reflect you ability to prepare relevant information on your future post.

Put only the most relevant facts and experiences in your motivation letter. Keep it brief and clear. However do not forget to tell something about you as a person.

Mention your accomplishments in education or professional experience. It would be also useful to express you perspectives in career of in education., for example where do you see yourself in the upcoming period.

Use a motivation letter as a tool to distinguish your application from other with sample qualifications.

Motivational (motivation, interest) letter for a mortgage is a written expose by the borrower or loan taker addressed to the loan giver, bank, real estate broker, accountant or any kind of institution with purpose to support the mortgage application. Nowadays more and more banks listed this kind of motivation letter in order to prevail its own clients to take more loans than needed and to stop misusage of the Bank’s founds, since 2005 many people bought their homes but they never intended to occupy its own houses/flats/condos and instead they quickly sold the real estate for profit.

Source:.Luckymountainhome.com

Now, many banks require an essay which will provide detailed description of the applicant’s intention while s/he is seeking for a credit. That motivational letter should contain the client’s motivation to buy that specific property, will all the chronological details described narrative:

– What is the intentions of the buyer with the property,

– Why s/he love the property,

– How s/he will take care of the place,

– How many kids are planning to have at that specific property.

In some cases the letter can contain plans for the future changes of the “size of the property”, family history of owning a real estate or how the owner feels about the community surrounding the property. Even thought this requirement disobeys the Fair Housing Act, and in some cases is against the law, in many cases loan takes are not the ones to be questioned. Their feelings and emotions about sharing the marital history, sex preference or pregnancy questions are irrelevant in this situation. They should do as they told.

Despite the fact of justification of the Bank’s intention, without questioning, the letter should be narrow, no longer that one page, containing all the above mentioned details. It will be useful if it is express your short description for loan motivation, like your credit history or explanation of the situation caused you pay late was not in your hands. Besides the motivation and intention of the buyer, a good motivational letter is desirable to include answers to the questions like: Are you moving within the neighborhood to downsize or to move up? Are you planning to live at the property, rent it or sell? What is the intention, or what happened with the home you family previously lived in? Answers to this kind of questions will be a perfect addition to the content mentioned above. In principle the loan officer in not asking too much, s/he wants to make sure that you will pay for the credit and you will not use the property in good manner.

Useful tip: Use everything that you think that is logical to persuade the Bank that you will live at the property you buying. Well known reasons could include nicer neighborhood, more rooms, closer to school or work location, away from industry or farms. Typically, lender is not interested in your family situation as long as it not concerns you credit ability.
